Long-term restoration ambition
Restoring Mongolia’s
Siberian Pine Forests
A community-led effort to renew native forests, strengthen local livelihoods and build a lasting model for restoration.
A long view of
forest restoration.
PINE+ connects ecological restoration with community participation and sustainable forest-based livelihoods.
Implementation target over 7 years
Long-term project horizon
Selenge province, Mongolia

One forest.
Many ways it matters.
Siberian pine forests store carbon, stabilize soil, regulate water and sustain biodiversity. They also support local livelihoods through pine-nut production and forest-based economic activity.
Restoration starts
with understanding.
Forest degradation, wildfire, climate change, pests and disease, unsustainable use and slow natural regeneration all add pressure.
of Mongolia’s Siberian pine forests are mature forests.

2015–2019Figures and periods as stated in the PINE+ Project materials. “Affected” describes the reported area; it is not an annual rate.
From seed to
productive forest.
An integrated process that brings together local seed sources, nursery expertise, careful planting and long-term stewardship.
Seed collection
Select suitable seed from local sources.
Nursery cultivation
Germinate, grow and prepare healthy seedlings.
Grafting
Use selected scions to support earlier cone production.
Forest planting
Prepare sites and transplant grafted seedlings.
Care & monitoring
Maintain, protect, measure and adapt over time.
BOGDKHAN MOUNTAIN · ULAANBAATARA pilot built
for learning.
The Bogdkhan Mountain pilot tested nursery cultivation, grafting, transplantation, maintenance and monitoring ahead of larger-scale implementation.
Restoration starts
on the ground.

we restore.
Seven-year targets pair with documented methods so progress can be tracked and independently reviewed.
